for a purpose

Reaching Children. Equipping Leaders. Multiplying the Gospel.

GEMS (Gospel Evangelistic Ministry in the Schools) is a children’s evangelism and discipleship program designed to equip local people to share the Gospel with children in their own communities. Originally developed for public primary schools in Botswana, GEMS combines practical training with age-appropriate biblical curriculum that leaders can use to teach children about Jesus and help them grow in their faith.

Rather than relying primarily on outside missionaries to lead the ministry, the GEMS model focuses on equipping and resourcing local leaders who can continue reaching children week after week. The original program includes a three-year curriculum, and GEMS is now expanding and adapting its materials for different age groups, ministry settings, cultures, and countries.

Bob and Barb Van Wyk are Iowa-based missionaries whose call to Africa began long before they ever made it their home. Barb received her call to Africa at just 12 years old, and Bob felt God call him to missions in Africa in 1989. After marrying in 1990, they built a life together centered on ministry and family. In 2010, they partnered with AGWM and moved with their three children to Botswana with a vision to train pastors and ministry leaders, but soon realized the overwhelming need for leaders equipped to minister specifically to children. That need began a journey of equipping others to reach and disciple the next generation.

After 16 years in Botswana, Bob and Barb are now carrying their lifelong calling into a new season, expanding their work beyond Botswana and across Africa. Their years of ministry have given them a deep love for the people of Africa, particularly its children, and they remain committed to going wherever God opens the door.
